Shih Tzu Week 42: April 12 (Day 288) – 18 (Day 294)

Shih Tzu Day 288: April 12 (Thursday)

Release the Kraken!

Flower has been spending more time on “her” couch again, instead of with us. So far so good; as long as she doesn’t pee on it, she can have her space. I assume she has been spending more time there because Dottie growls and tries to hiss her away when she comes to our couch. When she does that, John says, “Release the Kraken!” Nobody seems very afraid of her, so I don’t think her acting ferocious is working.

Come out and play

The shih tzus loved the homemade chicken jerky.Around 4 o’clock, Candy decided it was time for something other than napping and started prancing around the living room. I think she’s a little disappointed these days with her playmate choices. Nigel used to go play with her instantly, but lately he’s been as lazy as Dottie, and lies on the couch next to Mom a lot of the time. Flower finally joined her for a tap dance across the floor. And Nigel eventually got up and romped around with both of them. When they took it outside, he grabbed Candy’s tail in his mouth and wouldn’t let go, so she couldn’t get very far. He finally turned his attention to Flower to play the bitey face game.

Shih Tzu Day 289: April 13 (Friday)

Happy Birthday, Flower!

Flower shih tzu wearing a birthday crown. Today is Flower’s birthday! She is now 3 years old. I made up a batch of chicken jerky for her treat. One of my friends suggested Frosty Paws and I couldn’t find any at the closest Wal-Mart, so I found a homemade Frosty Paws recipe:

Directions:

 1. Blend all ingredients together and freeze in 3-ounce paper cupsShih tzus eating homemade Frosty Paws. .
 2. Microwave just a few seconds before serving.

The dogs loved the treats, once they found a way to get their tongues in the cups. When I make it again, I think I’ll use shorter containers. One of the fun parts of making dog treats is you can try them without feeling you are eating dog food! I actually thought the Frosty Paws treat was good! I had a few bites myself.

Candy shih tzu wears a birthday crown in Flower's honor.I dressed the girls up, with Flower in a new dress that says Girly Girls. And I bought them Happy Birthday crows from the Dollar Tree. I gave her a stuffed animal and rubber chicken from the Dollar Tree, too, but she ignored them. She was far more fascinated with the cardboard insert I took out of the wine box. She carried it to Shih Tzu Central and spent probably 20 minutes seeing how much of it she could tear apart.

The shih tzus investigate the homemade chicken jerky.Dottie didn’t care if it was Flower’s special day. She was sitting beside me, with Mom to herself, when her shih tzu half-sister came up to the couch this morning, Dottie didn’t want to give up her Mom time and did her growly fixation thing. I think she particularly doesn’t like it because Flower wants to be petted when she jumps up.

Indoor mess

This shih tzu loves cardboard!Someone pooped on the floor near the training pad and on the mat I have under the pad. It was the runny kind, and I hope it’s not from my homemade treats. They shouldn’t have anything in them that would cause that.

Shih Tzu Day 290 – 292: April 14 – 16 (Saturday – Monday)

I didn’t realize it, but I neglected to record any information in my journal for three days! I guess that means nothing exciting happened.

Shih Tzu Day 293: April 17 (Tuesday)

Celery treats

I passed out celery today. Candy doesn’t normally take it, but she did this time and chewed on it for a while. Dottie is the only one that wouldn’t take any.

Not so close

The shih tzus wait for the party to begin.Dottie was scratching the sofa arm this afternoon, so to stop her, I reached over and picked her up and sat her on my chest facing me. She wasn’t sure what to do, but she stayed there for several minutes staring at me. She finally moved off, but stayed next to me instead of retreating to her corner.

Shih Tzu Day 294: April 18 (Wednesday)

I was gone most of the day, so I didn’t have very much shih tzu time. Someone seems to be having tummy problems, because I found more poop on the floor.

Back it up

Dottie was peacefully sitting in her corner this afternoon when Flower jumped up, right next to her. Instead of sitting down, she started backing her butt up into Dottie. I’m not sure what the purpose was, but Dottie started making her Kraken sound. Flower seemed oblivious to it. I guess she knows Dottie’s growl is worse than her bite.

Shih Tzu Day 179: First Christmas with the Shih Tzus

Christmas morning grooming for the shih tzus

I got up at about 6 a.m. and finished wrapping presents. I got the stockings together for Dottie, Flower, Candy and Nigel. I put a stuffed animal and a lot of treats into each one. I added a light-up ball to Candy’s stocking. I don’t know which shih tzus might play with it, but I thought it was cute.

three shih tzus with Christmas stockings. We had quiche and mimosas for our Christmas breakfast when John got up. Then, we got prepared to groom the shih tzus. We decided that Candy and Nigel didn’t need trimming, but we gave them baths. Candy was very still and we bathed her quickly, but Nigel squirmed constantly, so he took longer. He was a little better with the blow dryer. Flower and Dottie were very good, both during the grooming, their baths and drying.

After they were dry, we put Nigel in his Grinch outfit and the female shih tzus in their dog dresses. I swapped the red and white dresses Flower and Dottie wore when Deb took their pictures, but left Candy in the one with candy canes and ornaments. I thought we had a couple of hours to take some pictures with their new collars and dog tags and stockings, and to just spend some time with the shih tzus, but my stepdaughter called to say they wanted to come over early. We ended up hurrying to get pictures done and the living room cleaned up. We did get some cute pictures of the dogs with their Christmas stockings.

To add to the chaos, Flower must have been nervous because at some point, she relieved herself on the couch. She did it on a very furry throw, and it puddled on it. I was surprised but happy that it hadn’t reached the couch, but it did when I tried to move it. I threw the throw and the cushion cover in the laundry, so when company started arriving, I had to grab a different throw and cover the foam cushion.

Christmas guests

a shih tzu and a rawhide candy cane. Candy always seems the most nervous around guests, so I took her upstairs and sat her near our closet before anyone arrived. When Candace and her family arrived, the other two female shih tzus ran to Shih Tzu Central. While we waited for the other family members to show up, we sat around the dining room table talking. Dottie and Flower eventually made their way across the room to the dining room corner where Candy’s dog bed is. They didn’t socialize with the guests, but I think they wanted to be near me. They stayed there the whole time we sat there talking.

I brought Candy back downstairs later and sat her in Shih Tzu Central. I am trying to get the shih tzus all used to people, so I picked up Flower, Candy and Dottie at different times and held them for a while as I talked to different people. Nigel is usually Mr. Sociable Shih Tzu, but he wasn’t as people friendly as normal. It could be that he is not feeling well. He was panting on the bed last night. He could have just been hot.

The female shih tzus got back to normal quickly after everyone left. I took some of the rawhide treats out of their stockings, like the lollipops and gingerbread men, and spread them around. They were all chewing on them and on the rawhide candy canes, so I guess they liked them.

Shih Tzu Day 176: The Snow and Flower “Shiver” Shih Tzu

another shih tzu snow day

a shih tzu in a jacket in the snow.It snowed A LOT last night. We wanted to go outside, but Mom insisted we wear our jackets. We hate wearing them, but I didn’t get very much ice on my tummy this time, so that was good.

a female shih tzu in a jacket in the snow. Me, Candy and Dottie came back inside, but Nigel wanted to stay outside and explore. Us female shih tzus had been inside for a while when we heard him barking. The Treat Man went to see what was wrong. We didn’t think the snow was very high, and the man had made a path for us, but Nigel still couldn’t get back up the porch steps. He was sitting there with his paws up on the porch, whining. He had a lot of snow on him. The man helped him up; he said the snow must have weighed him down.

I don’t know if it was because of the snow, but Mom stayed home with us almost all day. We were happy, because she has been gone a lot lately. Mom and the Treat Man have mentioned something called Christmas several times. We don’t know what that is, but if it has anything to do with how often Mom is gone, I don’t think we like it.

Flower “Shiver” Shih Tzu

two female shih tzus in jackets in the snowMom leaves sometimes when the Treat Man does and doesn’t come home until hours later. Sometimes she brings home lots of bags. We saw some toys that look really strange. They look like something I would like to chew on, but I guess they aren’t for us. Mom keeps them on shelves where we can’t reach them. We think they are probably for those little kids that come over sometimes.

a shih tzu in a jacket in the snowEver since she started bringing those dolls home, she has been calling us her Monster High “dogs.” She said I am so fluffy lately that I look like Abbey Bominable’s pet wooly mammoth, “Shiver.” I have no idea what a monster is, who Abbey Bominable is or what a wooly mammoth is, but I saw him, and Shiver did kind of look like me!

Although those toys must not be ours, we know that Mom has been looking for something for us. We heard her tell the Treat Man that she was having a hard time finding us “stockings,” because some were too big and others were too small. We have no idea what stockings are. I hope it’s not something else she is going to make us wear!

Day 169: Christmas Shoot for the Shih Tzus

the shih tzus say cheese

three shih tzu females posing for a Christmas card. The shih tzus were in for something different today. One of my closest friends worked for me as a photographer when I was editor of an aviation paper a few years ago. She volunteered to come over and take holiday pictures of Dottie, Candy, Flower and Nigel for Christmas. We decided to make it our Christmas luncheon combined doggie photography session.

a male shih tzu in a Grinch outfitBefore Deb got here, I set up our small Christmas tree inside Shih Tzu Central. I figured that would be where the female shih tzus would retreat to when Deb got here, so that would be the logical place to shoot their pictures. My plan was to move the tree back out once Deb left. We also combed the shih tzus and washed their faces, although they probably should have had a complete bath. Then I dressed the girls up in their holiday dresses and Nigel in his Grinch shirt. I made the mistake of letting them outside about a half hour before Deb arrived.

a shih tzu sitting on someone's legs. I could tell that Candy thought something was up. As soon as I let them outside, she ran under the trailer and stayed there. I tried to lure her out with a treat, but that didn’t work. Then I went to the end of the backyard and exclaimed that there was a cat back there, but she didn’t fall for it. I went inside and waited until she came out from under the trailer and headed for the far end of the backyard. I was quiet enough that she didn’t have time to escape when I came up behind her.

Deb and I were combining the photo shoot with our Christmas luncheon. I thought it might get the shih tzus a little used to her presence if she didn’t shoot right away, so we sat at the table and had appetizers and some wine. The girls ran into the corner of the dining room when she came in and stayed there for an hour while we sat there talking.

I wasn’t sure how we were going to get them into their corner, since they hadn’t run there when she came in. However, as soon as we got up from the table, they ran to Shih Tzu Central. Deb had brought a dog whistle with her, to get their attention for pictures. However, ironically, the female shih tzus were so scared that they sat still and she didn’t have a difficult time taking their pictures.

Of course, Nigel wasn’t afraid at all. He was all over Deb as soon as she came in the door. When she lay down on the floor to get a good close up of the girls, he crawled up on her legs and settled in. We did try to get him in a picture with the girls, but he wouldn’t sit still. She did end up getting a couple of pics of him by himself though.

Shih Tzu Day 126: Let It Snow

shih tzu snow day

four shih tzus wearing jackets in the snow; one is sticking his tongue out.

I woke up this morning to Candy barking instead of Dottie moaning. I’m not sure why she was the furry alarm clock today. She was still waiting at the bottom of the stairs, instead of going upstairs with her shih tzu sisters. When I went downstairs, I realized that it had snowed quite a bit. Maybe that’s why she was barking.

The female shih tzus went out on the porch for their breakfast, since I still don’t trust Nigel to eat near them without taking their food. They didn’t mind it, but none of them wanted to get off the porch.

However, the shih tzus were up to the challenge — and fun — of romping in the snow this afternoon. I bought them all dog jackets from Ross Dress For Less and was excited to put them on them. Flower’s is black and has a pink skull on the back. Candy’s is also pink, but says “Biker Babe.” Flower’s is pink and white polka dots. Nigel’s is black and is plain, except it has a fur collar. I thought all the shih tzus looked adorable in their dog clothes.

I didn’t have much trouble bundling up Nigel, Dottie and Candy, but Flower didn’t make it easy for me. She kept running around, until I finally trapped her in the kitchen.

I stayed outside and watched the shih tzus romping in the snow. They looked like they were having a lot of fun. A few times, Flower froze in time and I had to pull her out of the snow. Beyond that, I think she loved it. I know I loved watching them!
